Once

Saw Once, a fairly chaste little musical about a struggling musician who falls into unspoken, understated love with an immigrant woman who is also a frustrated musician. They circle each other and sing together, but don't really have the means to support themselves, let alone each other. It's a low-key kind of film however, more charming than dazzling, especially for a musical. There's one charming sequence where they attend a 'sing for your supper' dinner where a long table of musicians, lit by candles, take turns singing beautiful folk songs as they eat spaghetti.

Apart from the central impossible love, the plot of the film follows the guy as he tries to secure funding for an album. Studio time is not cheap, and they are so shoestring that they can't even sleep while they have it. This plot (of the trying to put together the album) makes the film seem like a sort of extended, well-produced music-video. The music is chill and pretty and it's the sort of thing that you could see with your parents. Bizarrely it is rated R. I don't know why.
