Gone Girl

Saw Gone Girl, a film about a man who is framed for the murder of his wife. To add insult to injury, a Nancy grace-like media goblin picks up the story and turns it into a cause du jour. Soon journalists are camping out in his front lawn and his every smile and interaction is dissected on social media. He is a nice guy but kind of a dope and has started to lose the once-keen edge that hooked his wife so long ago.

The film is very frustrating and compelling. It's a mystery film but it plays like a political drama, with pieces moving out of sight and subtle power-plays that shift the game entirely. Also like a political drama is the discomforting sense of cynicism about the whole thing. We feel we're sort of peeking behind a curtain at the ugly truth, but here it's not so much a political system, but a relationship that we're seeing inside of. Similar to Fight Club (same director as this one: Fincher) a sinister philosophy is presented and not really refuted. That unease, that something evil could be true, lingers and haunted me after the film was over with.
